The Egyptian theater show “Hamlet Upside Down” is participating in the 23rd edition of the Carthage Theater Days Festival, in a fierce competition with 100 works representing more than 20 countries.
Many artists contributed to preparing the work without pay, as it was a government production.
According to the show’s director, Mazen Gharbawy, “Hamlet upside down” will be the only work submitted by Egypt; So it was carefully chosen.
Al-Gharabawi considered that choosing this work to be the only one is “a great confidence from the festival administration in our show, as it is customary every year to choose two shows from Egypt, one inside the competition, and the other on the sidelines, but this year Hamlet will be solo.”
The Carthage Theater Festival will be held in Tunisia from 3-10 December.
The new Hamlet story
The English writer William Shakespeare created “Hamlet” in 1602, and it was seized by writers and artists of all times, to present it in theatrical, film and television form in dozens of forms and languages, each putting it in the mold that wants to harness its basic idea to serve the conditions of the era or the country.
In the show “Hamlet Upside Down”, the focus is on the idea of international and cultural conflicts, based on the nucleus of the play, which is the struggle of Hamlet and his uncle for power.
In press statements by the poet and critic Yousry Hassan, he saw that the new show receives the spirit of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but he conjures him as a mere ghost, and offers a new and perhaps shocking reading of the characters. His interests, and Amr Al-Qadi struggles against everyone.
The artist Khaled El-Sawy participates in embodying the ghost of Hamlet’s father, who Al-Gharabawi says, despite him being 22 years away from the stage, but he welcomed the role, and volunteered without pay.
“Patriotic duty”
As for the role of Hamlet himself, presented by Amr El-Qadi, he says about him in press statements, that what attracted him to the role is that he belongs to a famous play, but in a new way, and the character is full of challenges, especially since it was presented by many actors in the world, “and therefore we were keen to renew in all details of the work.” .
“Hamlet Upside Down”, produced by the Artistic House of Theater of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, written by Sameh Mahran, directed by Mazen Al-Gharabawi, represented by Amr Al-Qadi, Khaled Mahmoud, Ayman Al-Shewi, Samar Jaber, Nihad Saeed and many other talents, who spent a year of preparation and rehearsals without pay; Because participation in the state-run theater is “a national duty because it is the last castle of culture and art in Egypt,” according to statements by artist Ayman El-Shewi.
