Despite not being exactly a critical success among fans of the franchise, Shadow of the Tomb Raider did not take away Lara Croft from the public’s taste, which continues to wait for a new adventure from the explorer. The next title, however, should only be revealed in 2023.
At least that’s what Phil Rogers, CEO of Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, suggests during an investor meeting with Embracer Group, which recently became the owner of the studio (via Eurogamer).
In the conversation, the executive confirmed that the game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5. This information had already been revealed at the beginning of the year, but it was not clear if the project would undergo changes after the sale of the company by Square Enix.
According to Rogers, Epic Games‘ graphics engine will “elevate storytelling to new heights”, allowing for much more immersive visuals and story, serving as a foundation for the future of the franchise.
“The team is excited to show the direction we are going to take as soon as possible next year,” he concluded. Unfortunately, apart from the year, no disclosure window was given by the executive.
Despite Square Enix’s sale of Crystal Dynamics a few months ago, the studio has managed to obtain full rights to several franchises it has worked on, including Legacy of Kain and Tomb Raider itself.
