At least 8 people were killed and more than 20 injured in a tanker explosion inside a garage in eastern Baghdad, security and medical sources told AFP.
The Baghdad operations commander, Lieutenant-General Ahmed Salim, said that nine civilians were killed and 13 others wounded as a result of a tanker explosion east of the capital.
He added, “The accident of the tanker explosion is technical, not terrorist.”
A medical source told AFP that the explosion, which was heard in several areas in Baghdad, occurred in an open garage near a soccer field in a residential neighborhood in the east of the capital.
The official Security Media Cell said it had initiated “the necessary measures to find out the causes of the explosion.”
Reuters reported that most of the victims were soccer players who were on the field.
