Marc Gasol, the 39-year-old basketball player renowned for his achievements, has officially announced his retirement from the sport. Gasol, the younger brother of Pau Gasol, who won consecutive NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, made this decision public at a press conference held in Barcelona.
A Reflective Decision
During the press conference, Gasol expressed his thoughts on retirement, stating, “There’s a part of me that still said I could play. But no – you’ve got to pour water on that fire.” Despite this, he emphasized that he wouldn’t change a second of his 20-year basketball journey, including the inevitable challenges. “I don’t have a single thorn in my side. I’m very lucky.”
A Storied Career
Marc Gasol played in the NBA for 13 seasons, with 11 of those seasons dedicated to the Memphis Grizzlies, where he holds the second position in the all-time scoring list. His impactful contribution to the Toronto Raptors in 2019 led them to their first Larry O’Brien trophy as NBA champions. Gasol also played a pivotal role in Spain’s World Cup victories in 2006 and 2019 and contributed to Olympic silver medals in 2008 and 2012.
