Second Seeds Dominate to Win Second Grand Slam Doubles Crown

Veteran Hsieh and Partner Mertens Showcase Exceptional Skill in Victory

In a display of overwhelming tennis prowess, Hsieh Su-Wei and Elise Mertens captured the women’s doubles title at the Australian Open on Sunday. The pair dominated the final, taking down the Latvian-Ukrainian team of Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok with a commanding 6-1, 7-5 win.

The victory marks the duo’s second Grand Slam triumph following their 2021 Wimbledon win and positions Hsieh as the second oldest woman to ever clinch a Grand Slam doubles title, only preceded by the record held by Lisa Raymond.

Despite concluding her singles tenure at this year’s Melbourne Park, Hsieh Su-Wei continues to excel with her second title in the same tournament, adding to her Friday’s mixed doubles win.

The seasoned tandem displayed remarkable coherence and resilience through their match. They took an early lead in the first set and persisted, despite a more challenging second set where Ostapenko and Kichenok offered formidable resistance.

Ultimately, Hsieh and Mertens showcased their championship mettle, converting their first match point to take the crown. Mertens acknowledged the nail-biting final: “The second set was really close, and we had to fight really hard today. Thanks everyone for coming out,” she gratefully expressed.
