Thiago Motta’s Side Continues Impressive Form
Top-Four Battle Intensifies
Bologna’s Thiago Motta-led side clinched their sixth consecutive Serie A win, marking the first time since 1967 they achieved such a feat. They secured a fantastic 2-1 away victory against Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium, solidifying their position in the top four. With the top three teams in the league seemingly ahead of the chasing pack, the race for the fourth spot intensified, and both sides understood the significance of claiming all three points.
Atalanta Takes an Early Lead
Sixth-place Atalanta nearly got off to a perfect start when Matteo Ruggeri whipped in a cross that Charles De Ketelaere met with a stinging shot. However, the Belgian failed to keep his effort down, sending it over the bar. Despite the miss, Atalanta continued to press and eventually found the opening goal just before the half-hour mark.
Bologna Stages a Resilient Comeback
Meanwhile, Bologna struggled to equalize before halftime, prompting Motta to demand more from his team during the break. Motta made two changes at halftime, bringing on Alexis Saelemaekers and Jhon Lucumi. Saelemaekers made an immediate impact, winning a penalty in the 56th minute after being brought down in the area by Teun Koppmeiners.
Victory and Future Challenges
Joshua Zirkzee converted the subsequent penalty, marking his 10th league goal of the season and leveling the score for Bologna. Shortly after, Lewis Ferguson scored a volley from outside the box, completing the comeback. The crucial victory widened Bologna’s lead over Atalanta to five points. However, both teams face tough challenges ahead – Bologna will host league leaders Inter, while Atalanta will travel to face second-place Juventus in Turin.
