In Montreal, the Boston Bruins aren’t exactly the most popular team. After all, they are the eternal rivals of the CH, and even if the rivalry has run out of steam for a few years, the fact remains that they are not in the good graces of many Quebecers.
Brad Marchand is clearly not the crowd favorite in Montreal, let’s say.
That said, we still have to give credit where credit is due: this season, the Bruins are a real hockey machine. In fact, following their 6-0 win over the Flyers, they have an outstanding 34-5-4 record.

They have amassed at least one point in 38 of their 43 games this season. It’s absurd.
In fact, the pace at which the Bruins are winning games right now is downright historic: if they kept up the pace until the end of the campaign, they would end the season with 137 points.
In doing so, they would have the best season in NHL history, the current record for most points in a season being 132. The 1976-77 edition of the Canadiens currently holds it.
A bit ironic that the Bruins are winning at such a pace when the CH is near the bottom of the NHL…
Their current streak of 65 wins this season would also be an NHL record, while the best haul is 62 in a season (the 1995-96 Red Wings and 2018-19 Lightning share the record). Not only would that break the record, but it would surpass it quite substantially.
35 goals and 62 points for David Pastrnak, 40 points in 35 games for Brad Marchand, the return of David Krejci (34 points in 38 games) to the center of the second line, the offensive outbreak of Jake DeBrusk, the excellent defensive brigade led by Charlie McAvoy and the superb tandem of goaltenders led by Linus Ullmark (the favorite for the Vézina): these are not the reasons that are missing to explain the success of the Bruins this year. To say that some (including me) expected to see them take a step back this season…
I don’t know if the Bruins will be able to maintain this historic pace, but there is no indication that they are about to run out of steam. Everything is still going full speed and the depth of the club means that the recent loss of Jake DeBrusk is barely felt, although he is starting to get better.
Jake DeBrusk told NESN he’s back moving after “chillin” for a week. Said he hurt his “upper body” on his first shift, and his “lower body” right before he scored his first goal of the Winter Classic.

The Bostonians already have a 13-point lead (and a game in hand) over the Maple Leafs, who are second in the Atlantic. It’s not an insurmountable lead, but let’s say the odds of the Bruins finishing atop the division are pretty good.
In short, the Bruins are having quite the campaign, and the team’s new head coach, Jim Montgomery, deserves a ton of credit for taking his group to the next level. I had my doubts when the team let go of Bruce Cassidy, but clearly Montgomery is showing his worth as a coach, as he looks set to be rewarded with a Jack Adams trophy in a few months…
